Let's return to the lives of those involved in the R2E era with two new points of view. One from a young engineer fresh out of school, Yann Lano\u00eb, who began his professional career in technical management in Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle's team. The other is from Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin, maintenance technician at the Vitrolles regional branch. Both have joined the company at a key stage in its takeover by Honeywell-Bull.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yann Lano\u00eb, Technical Management Engineer<\/h1>\n

Born in 1957, he was a recent graduate of the ESEO engineering school in Angers when he joined R2E in 1981 as Technical Manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

By this time, Bull had already bought R2E and maintained it as a homogeneous internal structure, on the fringes of the Group's other departments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The technical management of R2E, based at Les Ulis in the Paris region, is split into two divisions: Hardware, headed by Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle, and Software, headed by Michel Joubert.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a degree in electronics, Yann Lano\u00eb naturally joined the Hardware team, which comprises <\/span>a team of around fifteen people, responsible for designing the hardware and producing the associated firmware.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yann Lano\u00eb worked there for 2 years making interface boards for peripherals such as screens, keyboards and hard disk or floppy disk drives (SASI). He thus became an input\/output specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its remit is to design the hardware for these boards and develop the firmware (in Z80 assembler), mainly for the Micral 80-21 and 80-31 models.<\/p>\n

He remembers having made a few firmware adaptations to specific keyboards for the banking sector, because the Micral, which was more for industrial use in the early days, is now (in 1981-1983) also popular with white-collar workers, and is well integrated into banks, the national education system, ministries including the Ministry of Justice, AFPA agencies, etc.<\/p>\n

For a very specific need, he also developed an interface card for IBM PC cassette drives, to retrieve programs developed in BASIC. And yes, the first IBM PCs could be equipped with a cassette drive!<\/p>\n

Commenting on this period of his life, Yann Lano\u00eb tells us that \"it was my first and most memorable job\". But all good things must come to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1983, prompted by Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle's departure to found his own company, many employees left Bull. Increasingly at odds with management over his vision of the future of computing, Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle set up Forum International to continue work on multiprocessor and multitasking computers, following on from the Micral. Several people followed his lead, but not Yann Lano\u00eb. On the advice of Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle himself, Yann Lano\u00eb joined Delta Dore to bring his computer manufacturing expertise to the company. Indeed, as <\/span>Forum International chose Delta Dore to build their computers, and Yann Lano\u00eb took on the role of facilitator in the relationship with the customer, explaining Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle's way of thinking internally and what he could expect from a manufacturer. <\/span>That's what he did for about 4 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why only four years? From the outset, Forum International's aim was to be at the cutting edge of progress, and it took up the challenge of the 32-bit processor. National Semiconductors (NS) had just released the NS32000, the very first fully 32-bit processor, ahead of Intel and Motorola. Unfortunately, it was so buggy that it performed no better than a Motorola 68000. NS corrected the situation and released a new version... in 1985 to correct all the known problems and finally achieve the expected performance. <\/span>But until 1985, this period of technical wandering was fatal to Forum International because of the additional investment required for the unsuccessful attempts to finalise the computer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Forum International had to terminate its contract with Delta Dore, which meant the end of the Micral adventure for Yann Lano\u00eb.<\/span><\/p>\n

He will remain with Delta Dore for the rest of his career. During his 35 years with the company, he held a variety of positions: senior technician, project and research manager, and finally director of embedded software and development for the industry business unit.<\/span><\/p>\n

A fine career that will come to an end in 2019 with a well-deserved retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin, maintenance technician<\/span><\/h1>\n

R2E's development also depends on the commercial success of its equipment with customers throughout France. The regional branches make a major contribution to this, as they are responsible for customer rollouts and the maintenance of their installations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin graduated with a BTS in electronics and was hired by the R2E agency in Vitrolles in November 1983. <\/span>Two years after Bull's takeover, R2E still stands apart from the rest of the Group, even in the regions. Not only from an organisational point of view, but also in terms of skills. Working there was very rewarding for Bull internally, because these employees were experts in IT compared with the others, and were recognised as such. A real team of experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

His job as a maintenance technician involves working on <\/span>Micral M (multi-processor, Intel 8080), Micral 802X (based on the Zilog Z80 processor), Micral 8055 (Z80 processor), SOR (networked system based on the 8055), Micral 9020 (8088 processor) and Micral 9050 (8086 processor). And beyond, <\/span>As he stayed with Bull for 15 years, Frederic Cousin was naturally responsible for maintaining the Micral Compatible PC range (from 30 to 600) and the Zenith range.<\/span><\/p>\n

On a daily basis on the roads of southern France, you have to imagine him in his vehicle with a boot full of maintenance equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

First and foremost, the essential soldering iron for changing components.<\/span><\/p>\n

But also boxes of hardware, including electronic components (lots of RAM) and replacement I\/O boards.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, Cynthia uses software on cartridges containing different versions of OS and applications to repair application problems. Or track down hardware problems with RAM testers, magnetic media testers, software for calibrating different types of drive (floppy, magnetic, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n

Last but not least, the documentation! Numerous binders of instructions that he never gets rid of, because in the 80s and 90s, electronic documentation simply didn't exist. So you had to develop the muscles to carry those kilos of paper representing the electronic schematics of the various electronic boards or the software instructions for debugging applications.<\/span><\/p>\n

A meticulous man, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin managed to keep his maintenance equipment in very good condition right up until his retirement. He did us the honour of handing it over to the association, so that the parts could become part of the Micral research project and the core collection.<\/span><\/p>\n

One customer managed by the Vitrolles branch, which Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin remembers well, is remarkable for the type of equipment installed. The client? AFPA. The equipment? the SOR. The use? to provide training by connecting students to a networked system.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SOR consisted of Micral 8055 servers and DEC VT100 clients. The server was located in a machine room, and the terminals in the classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n

But another customer in the region is famous for the number of Micral systems it has purchased and deployed. This is Autoroutes du Sud de la France, which chose the Micral N to manage its tolls. Unfortunately, the Vitrolles branch is not responsible for this customer, so Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin was unable to talk to us about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1999, Bull sold its microcomputing business to TASQ. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin continued to work in IT maintenance for a number of years before joining RTM (R\u00e9gie des Transports M\u00e9tropolitains) in 2014 to manage the industrial maintenance of the transport operator's network.<\/span><\/p>\n

Revenons \u00e0 la vie des acteurs de l’\u00e9poque R2E avec deux nouveaux points de vue. L’un d’un jeune ing\u00e9nieur fra\u00eechement sorti de l’\u00e9cole, Yann Lano\u00eb, qui d\u00e9marre sa carri\u00e8re professionnelle au sein de la direction technique dans l’\u00e9quipe de Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle. L’autre, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Cousin, technicien de maintenance en poste au sein de l’agence r\u00e9gionale de Vitrolles. Tous deux arrivent \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode charni\u00e8re du rachat par Honeywell-Bull. Yann Lano\u00eb, ing\u00e9nieur \u00e0 la direction technique N\u00e9 en 1957, il est tout jeune dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00e9cole d’ing\u00e9nieur ESEO d\u2019Angers lorsqu\u2019il arrive \u00e0 la R2E en 1981 dans la direction technique. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, Bull a d\u00e9j\u00e0 rachet\u00e9 la R2E et maintient cette derni\u00e8re sous la forme d\u2019une structure interne homog\u00e8ne, en marge des autres d\u00e9partements du groupe. La direction technique de l\u2019entit\u00e9 R2E, bas\u00e9e aux Ulis en r\u00e9gion parisienne, est scind\u00e9e en deux p\u00f4les : le Hardware sous la direction de Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle et le Software chez Michel Joubert. Dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 d’\u00e9lectronique, Yann Lano\u00eb int\u00e8gre naturellement l’\u00e9quipe Hardware compos\u00e9e d\u2019une quinzaine de personnes, dont la responsabilit\u00e9 couvre la conception du mat\u00e9riel en premier lieu et aussi la r\u00e9alisation des firmwares associ\u00e9s.   Yann Lano\u00eb y travaille pendant 2 ans \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation de cartes d\u2019interfa\u00e7age de p\u00e9riph\u00e9riques comme des \u00e9crans, des claviers et des lecteurs de disque dur ou disquettes (SASI). Il devient ainsi le sp\u00e9cialiste des entr\u00e9es\/sorties. Ses missions consistent \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser le design hardware de ces cartes et le d\u00e9veloppement des firmwares (en assembleur Z80) principalement pour les mod\u00e8les Micral 80-21, 80-31. Il se souvient avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 quelques adaptations de firmware de claviers sp\u00e9cifiques pour le domaine bancaire car le Micral, plut\u00f4t \u00e0 vocation industrielle au tout d\u00e9but, est maintenant (en 1981-1983) aussi pris\u00e9 par les cols blancs et bien int\u00e9gr\u00e9 dans les banques, l’\u00e9ducation nationale, les minist\u00e8res dont celui de la justice, les agences de l’AFPA… Pour un besoin tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cifique, il d\u00e9veloppe \u00e9galement une carte d’interface pour lecteur de cassette d’IBM PCs afin de r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer les programmes d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s en BASIC. Et oui, les premiers IBM PC pouvaient \u00eatre dot\u00e9s de lecteur de cassette !! \u00c0 propos de cette p\u00e9riode de sa vie, Yann Lano\u00eb nous d\u00e9clare que \u201cc’\u00e9tait mon premier et plus marquant emploi\u201d. Mais toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin. En 1983, sous l’impulsion du d\u00e9part de Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle pour fonder sa soci\u00e9t\u00e9, de nombreux collaborateurs quittent alors Bull. De plus en plus en d\u00e9saccord avec la direction sur la vision de l\u2019avenir de l\u2019informatique, Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle cr\u00e9e ainsi Forum International pour continuer le travail sur des ordinateurs multiprocesseurs et multit\u00e2ches dans la continuit\u00e9 du Micral. Plusieurs personnes le suivent mais pas Yann Lano\u00eb. Celui-ci, sur les conseils de Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle lui m\u00eame, int\u00e8gre la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Delta Dore afin d\u2019y amener l\u2019expertise de la fabrication d’ordinateurs. En effet, comme Forum International choisit Delta Dore pour r\u00e9aliser leurs ordinateurs, Yann Lano\u00eb prend le r\u00f4le de facilitateur dans la relation avec le client, d’expliquer en interne le mode de pens\u00e9e de Fran\u00e7ois Gernelle et ce qu’il peut attendre d’un fabricant.
