The MO5.COM association has the great pleasure of announcing that Satoru Okada, co-creator of the Game Boy, has just joined the association as an honorary member.
He considers our initiative necessary and welcome, and offers us his support by agreeing to become an honorary member of the association. There is no doubt that the support of such a personality from the world of video games will help us to make ourselves known and develop.
Born on January 10, 1947, Satoru Okada joined Nintendo in 1975 as an engineer in the Nintendo Research & Development 1 division headed by Gunpei Yokoi. He brings to the latter his knowledge of recent developments in electronics, and quickly becomes his right-hand man to help him design countless games and toys. Among them, we find in particular the B&W Blocks bricks inspired by LEGO, the “Kōsenjū” optoelectronic guns and the Game & Watch electronic games which are enjoying dazzling success around the world. In arcades, he helped develop the Laser Clay System shooting simulators (1973) and developed Donkey Kong Jr. (1982). In the console field, he became the producer of a large number of software for the Famicom – in particular titles using accessories such as the shooting games Duck Hunt and Hogan’s Alley (1984), and those which used the famous robot R.O.B. . He is also the chief director of other 8-bit classics like Metroid and Kid Icarus (1986) and Famicom Wars (1988). But perhaps his greatest achievement remains being able to impose his ideas for the successors of Game & Watch; he became responsible for the development of the Game Boy (1989) and directed that of all launch titles including Super Mario Land. Subsequently, he focused even more on hardware, especially since Yokoi left Nintendo in 1996, and R&D1 was then divided into two branches, one of which was dedicated to laptops. Okada became responsible and created the Game Boy Color (1998), the Game Boy Advance (2001) and finally the Nintendo DS (2004). He finally retired in January 2007 but remained an honorary advisor under contract for Nintendo until January 2010.
